Harvey Jones – Linear Kitchen
The house Rodney Morgan shares with his
partner and young daughter in Newport,
South Wales, once formed part of Tredegar
House, a neighbouring seventeenth-century
mansion. Built in 1910, it was originally used
by Lord Tredegar’s butlers and servants.
The slender proportions of the conservatory
were too small for his growing family, so
Rodney produced drawings for a more
substantial extension to accommodate
his ideal kitchen: a functional family space
fusing ‘modern and traditional’ features.

Layout Project
The architectural design cleverly draws in
the lush greenery of the garden: towering
conifer trees are visible through a large
apex window. A four-meter long window
runs horizontally beneath, ‘so you have a
panoramic view of the garden as you’re
standing at the sink’, says Rodney. Skylights
ensure the kitchen is flooded with natural
light throughout the day. After showing the designer at Harvey Jones
his plans, they collaboratively ‘moved things
around a bit and juggled’. An island was
positioned directly beneath the ceiling’s
central wooden beam, from which three
stainless steel lights hang.
Three chairs at the end of the island offer
the family a view of the garden while eating.
