One way to create more temporary accommodation is to convert large properties into houses of multiple occupation (HMOs.) This housing model has faced a lot of criticism, yet is a quick and financially viable solution to deliver homes for more people. HMOs are an effective way to increase housing stock because they allow developers to maximise available space in the shortest amount of time. Delivering these refurbishment projects ensures that new homes can be created quickly in key residential areas. Therefore, they are an ideal solution to alleviate the housing crisis. HMOs can add true social value to communities by offering secure housing to those in need. Delivering these models in key cities, such as Manchester, Liverpool and Derby, has enabled us to house several families and individuals in a property that was previously a single dwelling. This tactic ensures more residents can access safe accommodation when required. What next? Ultimately, there are many benefits to renovating current housing stock and this should become a greater priority across both the public and private sectors. Whether developers are hoping to create long or short- term accommodation, the ability to deliver homes quickly while maximising space is essential, particularly when creating homes for the most vulnerable in our society. www.bdg-a-d.com Image Credit: Gareth Gardner www.refurbandrestore.co.uk - 9
