shackerley Provides sureclad ® Engineered Stone Solution to Award Winning Edinburgh Project
The University of Edinburgh’ s Appleton Tower was designed by Alan Reiach, Eric Hall and Partners as part of the University’ s George Square development in the 1960s.
Now the building’ s pre-cast concrete and aluminium frame glazed façades have been stripped out and replaced with Shackerley’ s SureClad ® engineered stone ventilated façade system in a white, honed colourway as part of a programme to renew the building envelope and construct an additional storey at roof level and a new feature entrance. Specification of a SureClad ® engineered stone ventilated façade system offered a cost-effective route to providing an aesthetic that echoed the appearance of the façade of the University Informatics Forum directly opposite. The relative light weight of the 15mm SureClad ® panels also satisfied the loading capabilities on the remaining concrete structure and enabled full insulation of the building within a ventilated façade.
The finished project has recently won a RICS Award for Design Through Innovation.
