Patricia Byson Burbank ’86 of Horton, Mich.,
came to Siena in her 30s, seeking a degree that
would allow her to work in the field of substance
abuse. The week after finishing her last class, she
did just that, starting full-time at what was then the
Sage Center at Bixby Hospital. Twelve years and a
counseling education master’s degree at Siena later,
she became program manager of Washington Way
Recovery Center. Six years ago, she opened a private
practice in Jackson that also allows her time to run
a second business (rental vacation home) and enjoy
20 grandchildren and the “twists and turns” that
life brings. She looks back “with deepest gratitude
to Pat Palmer” whose encouragement on her first
visit “made the rest of my life possible.”
Barbara DeVantier Schmidt ’86 of Blissfield
began teaching elementary school in Adrian immediately after graduation. Ten years later, after the
birth of their third child, she and husband Ron ’90
(an elementary teacher in Deerfield) agreed Barbara
would become a stay-at-home mom. It was, she
says, “the best decision” they ever made. “The time
spent together I treasure, and I am thankful I was
able to be at home with them. When our children
were grown, I ended up back teaching elementary
school in Adrian” where she continues today. The
Schmidts have a son and daughter at Adrian College,
and a daughter in high school in Blissfield. Scrapbooking, swimming and family trips add fun to life;
and faith provides the foundation.

Innovative Theatre Award for Outstanding Solo
Performance for his work in “Polanski, Polanski.”
The IT Awards are given annually to honor individuals and organizations who have achieved artistic
excellence in Off-Off-Broadway theatre.

Strategic Partners Firm of Canton, Mich. She has
been employed with Strategic Partners since 2007
and most recently was fundraising systems and
annual fund consultant. She will also be the director
of operations and client service management. She
currently resides in Saline, Mich.
