Sister Helene O’Connor, OP
Endowed Scholarship
Mary Jo Stolpmann Fleming ’47, one of
many alumnae art majors shaped by Sister
Helene, has taken the lead in establishing
a scholarship honoring the first art professor at Siena Heights. The scholarship will
encourage future generations of aspiring
artists and help to maintain the Studio
Angelico tradition of excellence started
by Sister Helene.
Progress Report: Gifts and commitments totaling $7,660 have been received
to date for the Helene O’Connor scholarship endowment.
Sister Helene O’Connor, OP ’34
(1909-1992)
Siena Heights’ first professor of art
(1936-56). Founded Studio Angelico on
the fifth floor of Sacred Heart Hall (1938).
A demanding teacher and lifelong friend
to her students. Later taught high school
math and science and conducted research
for the Atomic Energy Commission. Poet,
philosopher, and universal scholar.
Sister Mary Philip Ryan, OP
Endowed Scholarship
The family and friends of “Mary Phil”
have initiated a scholarship endowment
honoring the Sister who was a pioneer in
the Congregation’s foreign missions and
became senior historian of the Adrian
Dominican Sisters. The scholarship will
support students from the Philippines or
of Philippine descent who are majoring in
the humanities.
Progress Report: Gifts and pledges have
passed the $9,700 mark.
