New SHU award
honors Fred Smith

ow do you honor a humble
person who recently marked
400 victories as a coach and
has long served his community? By
creating an award in his name, that’s
how.
Siena Heights has created an award
named for Fred Smith, head men’s basketball coach and athletic director. Fred
achieved a major milestone last fall,
when he notched his 400th victory on
the court. Even more unusual in coaching circles: all those victories have been
at Siena Heights, where Fred has been
an outgoing ambassador for 25 years.
The Fred Smith Champion Award is not
an athletic award. Instead, it will be
given annually to a member of
the SHU community
