Scott McClure leaves for NAIA in Tulsa, OK
ong-time Siena Heights sports information director Scott McClure ’86 left the
University in September to become Championship Events Administrator for the
National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in Oklahoma. A staff
member in the Siena Heights athletic department for the past 11 years, Scott served
as assistant men’s basketball coach in addition to his sports information responsibilities, which included serving as media director for the
Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC). An active member
of the Lenawee County community, Scott was a volunteer and cocaptain for the Siena Heights Relay for Life Team, a member of the
Relay for Life executive committee, and a community coordinator
for the Alzheimers Association. Scott, his wife Michelle Hellner
McClure ’86, and their two children, Tyler and Kalli, are living in
Tulsa, OK.
Bauer earns NAIA coaching honors
rack and field coach Tim Bauer ‘82 was named
Region VIII “Coach of the Year” at the NAIA
Outdoor Track & Field Championships last spring.
A member of the NAIA Track & Field Coaches
Association for the past four years, Bauer also has been
named President of that group for the next three years.

Spring Sports Wrap-Ups
Track & Field
The Saints’ women’s team placed second and the men’s team was third at the WHAC Outdoor Championships in April. Eight men and four women qualified for the NAIA Outdoor
Championships. Jessica Hawkins became a four-time All-American with a 6th place finish
in the javelin, setting a new school record with a distance of 129-9. Matt Miller became a
three-time All-American with a sixth place finish in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:56.60.
Honorable Mention All-American status went to twin brothers Gary and Kevin Schultz
(10,000 meter run) and Chitranjan Greer-Travis (hammer throw, with a school record distance
of 165-4). Named All-American Scholar Athletes were Carl Spina (for the fourth time) and
Gina Watson (for the third time).
Softball
Coach Jenelle Zook’s squad (23-21-1) won its final four regular-season league games to jump
from fourth to second place in the final WHAC standings. The Saints went 1-2 in the postseason tournament and were eliminated by NAIA Region VIII champion Cornerstone. Leslie
Keane (outfield), Jamie Hallenbeck (shortstop) and Jamie Rennert (outfield) were named to
the All-WHAC Team. For the second consecutive season, Jen Roberts (catcher) and Kristin
Heinze (pitcher) were named NAIA All-American Scholar-Athletes.
Baseball
Playing their final six league games against the top two teams (Indiana Tech and Aquinas),
the Saints (21-40) went 0-6 and dropped to sixth place in the final league standings. Matt
Pike (pitcher, shortstop) and Brian Jeffrey (catcher) were named to the All-WHAC Team.
Kris Hemry was named an NAIA All-American Scholar-Athlete.
Fall Sports Updates
• Men’s Soccer: The Saints finished the
season second behind #1 Aquinas in the
Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference.
Siena Heights compiled a season record
of 13-6-2 overall, 10-2-2 in the league.
• Women’s Soccer: Siena Heights finished
the season with a 12-2-0 league record
(16-6-0 overall). They entered (and finished) the WHAC tournament in second
place behind Madonna.
• Cross Country: The Siena Heights
men were ranked #13 in the NAIA in late
October.
• Volleyball: Siena Heights compiled a
7-5 WHAC record (28-13 overall) and
ended the season tied with Aquinas for
3rd behind Madonna and Cornerstone.
Emmet Award Winners
NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete Nicole
Tobin, a senior forward and Siena’s all-time
scoring and assist leader in women’s soccer,
received the Thomas A. Emmet Award last
spring. Co-recipient was NAIA All-American
Scholar Athlete Jeff Gulleckson, who helped
the men’s basketball team post an 86-24
record with three NAIA National Championship appearances in his first three years. The
Emmet Award, voted on by the coaches and
staff of the athletics department, is presented
each spring to the top male and female athlete at Siena Heights who has completed
his/her junior year.
Congratulations!
The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association announced early this fall that the
1999-2000 SHU women’s basketball team
finished 16th in the top 25 of the Academic
Honor Roll with an average GPA of 3.289.
In addition, nine 1999-2000 student athletes
representing men’s and women’s basketball,
men’s and women’s track, baseball, women’s
soccer and women’s cross country earned
NAIA honors as All-American and Academic
All-American Scholar Athletes.
