HOME and GARDEN

I

joined Terri , and her realtor Kelly Johnson , back in April , to look at several residential properties along Highway 144 that had been rezoned for potential commercial use . We found one house that would fit their business needs well , but it needed a lot of cosmetic work to transform it from a dated residence into the “ Coastal Modern ” commercial office they envisioned .
“ Purchasing the residential property and converting it to commercial gave us more options . Freedom comes in the planning of a space to suit your exact needs . You are able to input those personal touches and preferences to make a commercial space into your home away from home . Basically , you spend more of your waking hours in a business space , so why not make it comfortable ? Richmond Heights offered the best choice for this concept by providing the residential feel of a neighborhood with the viability

Being a part of the historical district gives me the feeling of coming full circle , as my grandfather ( Frank McCall ) was Henry Ford ’ s chemist prior to the lab burning down .

The interior of the building needed a large rework but we tried
to save some unique architectural elements . The original vaulted
ceiling in the living room with exposed brick fireplace will receive a modern up fit . Simulated oak flooring will run throughout the new space while incorporating the white background with black accents from the exterior into the interior of the space as well .

of commercial office space due to its storefront on Ford Avenue ,” Bobby affirms .
This small , non-descript , brick structure had no immediate curb appeal . It was going to need a lot of changes to become a prominent business on this busy commercial corridor and it just so happened that the property they decided to purchase fell within the city ’ s new Ford Overlay District . I knew immediately how I could recommend we give this small single story 1980s building a face lift .

Though this was not an original Ford structure , I wanted all changes to be in-line with the architectural style he originally established in our town . Working with the owners building contractor , Michael Parker of Parker Homes , we painted to entire façade of the building a creamy white color and added black accents in the window trim . New gas lantern inspired light fixtures and modern signage along with a beautiful mahogany wood door , will complete the look when finished .

Ford ’ s chemist prior to the lab burning down ,” says Terri . Artifacts from his lab can be found at the Richmond Hill History Museum . “ I have enjoyed the transformation of bringing light into a space which was dark . Each space is designed with both practicality and comfort in mind . The results will be modern and yet timeless which perfectly coincides with the building itself and our practice . It has also been encouraging to see the enthusiasm and support from the city .”
The business has been able to take advantage of several grants enabling the Jarrells to bring the design more in-line with a historical palette with painting , lighting , and landscaping . “ We appreciate the foresight of the Downtown Development Authority . They are working hard to encourage the development of business within the city limits . The Downtown Development Authority has been able to incentivize business owners to make changes that help create opportunities for local business to have an economic impact for the future by investing here .”
EDITOR ’ S NOTE : We are keeping an eye on the progress of this cool project and will share the “ After ” photos in our next issue .•
