Memories of my childhood
By Fetehya Alaobaidy
I lived with my family in Iraq. I was the smallest daughter in the
family. I grew up with my two sisters who were older than me. My
older 2 brothers and 4 sisters were married and did not live at home.
I was the spoiled girl in my house.
My house was big. I shared it with my 2 older sisters and my father.
My father was employed in a hospital. My family all enjoyed religious
events. We celebrated Eid Al Fitr Al -mubarak and Eid ul- Adha for
Hajj. My father would buy the lamb and the butcher would slaughter
it. We had a big kitchen, so we could cook the meat on a charcoal grill.
All my family was happy to eat and enjoy the fresh food.
Life was very simple. There was no hatred. My hobbies were drawing,
paper decoration, sewing and reading. In the summer holidays l went
to the library to borrow books. When l was s ix years old my father
bought a TV. Iraq was the first Arab country to have channel TV in
1956.
I had one friend in school. I went with her to school. We were in the
same class. I was happy when l went to school and l was successful. I
could study without help.
