Reflecting on the Great Depression Through Art 1 | 页面 5

Casey Orr, the author of this cartoon, was heavily opposed to the New Deal. Casey published this piece in 1935, two years after the New Deal first took effect. In it, he likens the plan to a trojan horse, meant to lull Americans into a false sense of security and allow roosevelt to tamper with the core of American doctrine, the Constitution. Casey’s illustration was circulated in the Chicago Tribune, a prominent newspaper which allowed him to spread this idea that the New Deal was unconstitutional to a large audience.
