Rediscover America Issue 4 - Winter 2017 | Page 7

I'll never forget the first time I saw the Smoky Mountains in person. For starters, I had made a wrong turn in route and was almost frustrated enough to just turn around. Thankfully, I didn't.

The Smoky Mountains are the most popular scenic attraction in America for a very good reason. The views are unlike anywhere else in the U.S. Millions visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park each year. While travelers can spend time strictly inside the park, most stay in one of the neighboring towns like Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg.

I've spent considerable time in both of these destinations. They are tourist downs, without a doubt. But, the folks that live and work here are among some of the nicest people I've found during my travels.

Back in November, a fire raged through the Smoky Mountains displacing many, injuring dozens and killing others. Making news around the world, people watched with sadness - knowing full well that this beloved jewel could never be replaced if destroyed.

The good news is the fire is out and Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are both open for business. One thing media attention, especially images of floods or fires does is make people shy away from visiting. When in fact, that is the absolute worst thing in the world for towns affected by tragedy. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are ready for you to visit - now or in the near future. Go, have fun and help them get back on their feet.
