Rediscover America Issue 2 - October 2016 | Page 50

What exactly is this place?

We have the world's largest collection of fine-scale miniatures and one of the largest displays of antique toys in the United States.

How is this museum different from others that display toys?

One thing that's different is we have first hand accounts of many of the people who played with the toys in our collection. We have a paratrooper doll from World War II that includes stories about how the original owner would throw it off the roof to make it fly.

How would you define a miniature?

Our collection is made up primarily of 1:12 scale miniatures. That means that every inch on the miniature equals twelve inches on the full-scale piece

How intricate are these pieces?

Very complex. For example, we have a skeleton that stands about five inches tall that's made out of bamboo and is pegged so that it completely moves just like one you would find in a biology classroom.

I understand the museum recently underwent a bit of a face lift?

We redesigned the layout of the museum to offer more interpretation and created some really fabulous exhibits so people can learn more about what they're looking at. It's also easier now to navigate and is much brighter with fun colors.
