This one is my all-time favourite
and although I am fairly new
to throwing this one around in
snags, the success we have shared
together has been amazing. I wish I
had discovered these lures earlier,
as they are no longer distributed
in Australia. The Zerek Long Trail
is my go-to lure for barramundi,
as it imitates the garfish. They are
a shallow diving (0.8m) slow float
lure which work very well for the
style of fishing I do. At half tide on
the run out, I look for a bank out
near the mouth of the creek with
lots of lay down trees, looking for
the dirty water coming off the
bank. A lot of the time you will
find the fish school up on one or
two snags on the bank, and you
can spot lock or drop the anchor,
which is much quieter and does
not spook any fish moving
through the area. The Long Trail
came in 130mm and 170mm, and
a lot of my friends laugh when
they see me throwing around a
170mm lure, dropping jokes like,
“Are you chasing marlin in the
creeks?” I just laugh it off, and
they get a shock when it connects
with a fish. It just changes the
way people think about fishing,
because we all know weedless
plastics are what the majority of
lure fisherman use these days. I
find that a little boring, since you
don’t get that hard hit on a plastic
that you do on a hard-body lure.
It just doesn’t get me excited
the way fishing a hard-body lure
does.
