REDD: What's your opinion on the importance of roots, traditions, respecting originals and sources?

DJ Tone:Of course I think it’s important to recognize where samples came from as well as the true artistry of DJing, vinyl, wax, turntables and all the other taboo topics other DJs get caught up in. I respect it, but I don’t get too caught up in the politics of it all.

REDD: What makes you unique as a DJ?

DJ Tone: My personality! There are a million DJs, thousands of female DJs, but there’s only 1 me. I like to have fun, laugh, and speak my mood or what I’m thinking through what I play. 

REDD: From your point of view, what challenges do lady DJ’s face that male DJ’s are not subject to?

DJ Tone:There’s so many! As a female, a majority of people judge us on what we look like before we even play. It’s harder to be heard or taken as serious as a female DJ because this is a male dominated industry. And unfortunately, we encounter a lot of chauvinism, not just from those who hire us, but from other male DJs as well. Being a female DJ is a different beast that most male DJs wouldn’t know how to deal with!

Adventures of Dating:

WEIRDO!

Brandee "Bree" Hunt

I know that many of us have stories about that person you dated, or at least attempted to date but they showed you a sign that they were crazy, right?! Let me tell you about my dating adventures…

After being divorced for some time, I decided it was time to ‘get back in the saddle’ and start dating again. I had already made it up in my mind about the three major No’s:

1. No sex

2. No meeting my daughters

3. No knowing my address.

We would meet in a mutual spot, well-lit and open area with lots of people and drive in separate cars. You think that was doing too much? Well, I am glad that I took the necessary precautions because this weirdo that I dated…

His name was Weirdo (for privacy purposes, we’ll call him Weirdo). I met him while taking the Green Line home from work-I should’ve known better than to meet ANY guy at the Green Line, but still.

He worked for the CTA so I thought to myself “OK, he has a good job at least!”

After approximately 30 minutes, we exchanged numbers. I didn’t think anything of it, but I should have known something was wrong when he called me within the first 10 minutes saying he was just checking to make sure I hadn’t given a fake number, lol! Instead of me taking that as a warning sign, I thought it was cute and fell for the okey-doke.

We talked on the phone everyday for maybe a week.

As I entered my house, he heard my daughters and mom talking in the background and asked who it was that he heard. I told him it was my mom and kids, to which he replied “I can’t wait to meet your mother!” Ummmm, WEIRD!!! I came up with some kind of excuse to get off the phone with him, and ignored his calls for 3 weeks until I discovered an app to block him completely! I mean seriously? Who asks to meet your mom after one week of ‘talking’??? A WEIRDO, that’s who!

Stay tuned for the next issue to read about my ‘Adventures of Dating’ stories!
