As the first and most
celebrated prodigy in music
history, Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart (1756-1791) set the
bar high: he started composing at the age of 5, completed his first symphony
at 9, and composed his first
opera at 12.
it is now. Always in need of money, Mozart took on several major commissions
under severe time constraint towards
the end of his life, including one from a
mysterious masked stranger to write
a requiem – Mass for the Dead – which
he came to believe was for himself. The
work was left unfinished as his body was
being buried in an unmarked grave.
Elegance and tastefulness abound in
Mozart’s music. Masterpieces such as
Piano Concerto No. 20 and th e opera Don
Giovanni impart a deep grasp of humanity along with memorable and achingly
beautiful melodies that are at once accessible and ethereal.

over Europe, often accompanied by his
violinist father and musically inclined
older sister. After a few unsuccessful
attempts to make it as a court musician
in Salzburg, Austria (his hometown),
Mozart moved to Vienna when he was
25. There he had the intention of making a living as a freelance musician, an
aspiration that was as difficult then as
