3. Golfing

Iowa has the most golf courses per capita in the United States. The nearest, Waveland Golf Course, is located on University Ave. There’s also an indoor range for when the inclement weather sets in.

4. Fishing / Hunting

Just north of the city is Saylorville Lake. This 9.3 square mile reservoir is a popular spring-fall hangout for boaters, campers, hunters, and fishermen. There are also many trails and a disc golf course. Now that I mentioned disc golf, I should also let you know that the metro area has several disc golf courses! This emerging sport is really catching on and is a great economical way to blow off some steam.

6. Skiing

The Hawkeye state may become a little less lively once the snow arrives, but there is still plenty to do. You won’t be finding any mountains nearby, but there are still various small ski resorts, two of the closest being Seven Oaks in Boone, and Sleepy Hollow Sports Park right here in Des Moines. Both areas have several outdoor activities for all seasons including but not limited to canoeing, paintball, go karts, and mini golf. Along with skiing/snowboarding each place also includes a tubing hill for those who would rather sit down than stand up while flying down a snow-covered hill. It’s also worth noting that both places feature various student discounts and evening rates.

5. Hot Air Balloons

Just south of the city is Indianola, which is home to the National Balloon Classic, which is held in late July each year. This 9-day event celebrates more than 200 years of Hot Air Balloon history and includes live bands, fireworks and hot air balloon rides.

7. Rock Climbing

Climb Iowa is the state’s largest indoor climbing and training facility with more than 10,000 square feet for you to conquer. Des Moines University actually has a group of students who regularly go there and enjoy all they have to offer, as there are student and group discounts offered.
