Those from Iowa generally have a good idea of what there is to do around the state known mostly for farming, but for people coming from afar, there tends to be some hesitation when wondering what in the world they can find to do in their free time. I’ve lived in central Iowa my entire life, and can confidently tell you that there is plenty to do in the great outdoors if you know where to look!

Iowa isn’t going to lead categories like “best” or “biggest” but what does shine through is how versatile and diverse the activities and terrain is. Most people think Iowa is as flat as a pancake, but the truth is we aren’t even in the top 15 flattest states (18th flattest). We have a distinct four seasons, which you will be acclimated to quickly which allows for an array of warm and cold weather sports.

1. Downtown Farmer's Market

This weekly attraction which runs on Saturdays from 7am-noon May 3 - October 25 has become immensely popular over the years. With a goal to connect urban and rural communities, the market supports more than 300 vendors including many local families and talents and takes place downtown on Court Ave. There's also an indoor farmer's market during the winter.

2. Running / Biking Trails

Within just a few miles of campus is Gray’s Lake. This popular 167-acre park has a two-mile trail encircles the lake. Though this is one of the most well-known parks, it’s also notable that Des Moines has 72 public parks spanning over 3000 acres and 50 miles of trails. Just across the street is also the WaterWorks park. Be on the lookout for the oldest, largest and longest bike-touring event in the world, RAGBRAI. This annual summertime event draws thousands of riders from all across the country to ride the backroads of Iowa from border to border.
