DMU provides a safe and welcoming environment to those who identify as LBGTQ. The university has Safe Zone, a program designed especially for LBGTQ individuals who want to talk to someone without fear of being discriminated against or judged. Participants who go through this program are not exclusively LGTBQ, but are allies including other peers, faculty, and staff and are easily identified by the Safe Zone sticker. Training for Safe Zone is held multiple times throughout the academic year. If you are interested in getting involved with the Safe Zone program you can contact Dr. Salas, the multicultural affairs director, at [email protected].

Outside of DMU, the city of Des Moines has a present LGBTQ community. The historical East Village is a gay friendly neighborhood. A popular venue is the Blazing Saddle, whose crowd is a little more mature but draws a diverse crowd on the weekends. A couple blocks away is the Garden, a gay bar that is popular with lesbians. Another venue that is off the beaten path is Le Boi, which draws a younger crowd. Their weekend drag shows are always popular with the gay community. Overall, the school and city are very LGBTQ friendly.
