If you have research experience or just really want to find out how fun it can be, DMU has some great opportunities to get involved in all types of research. Dr. Vasillios Vardaxis is the research program director for DMU, and his research interests are primarily associated with podiatric issues, like surgical principles and biomechanical effects on the foot and ankle. Once every month, he holds a research forum for the DPM program, in which he discusses topics such as current research interests in the field or a need for students to participate in research. DMU also does a great job sponsoring many research symposiums and conferences throughout the year for students to present their posters as well to hear from other researchers and faculty in the community.

If you are interested in participating in research, it is best to get involved early so that you are able to apply for the Summer Research Program in your first year. The Summer Research Program is a paid position for 320 hours and will involve a topic of your choosing to complete under the guidance of a professor as a research mentor. Personally, I enjoy research because it is a great way to learn about the behind-the-scenes issues with our profession while also taking a break from the usual study grind. Anyone that is interested is welcome to contact me more about it, but the best advice I can give is to approach a professor about it early in the fall semester and find a topic that closely fits your interests.
