A rite of passage is an important phase in one’s life, where they move from one phase of their life to the next. It’s commonly seen in youth, when adolescents come to the point in their lives where they are no longer children and are seen as adults, but there are many different forms of rites of passage.

This might include breaking up with a current boyfriend or girlfriend, a period of questioning and experimenting, telling friends and family, or getting into a new homosexual relationship.

One such passage is when an individual “comes out of the closet” and is comfortable with themselves being attracted to the same sex. There are three phases to every rite of passage; severance, threshold, and the return. For homosexual individuals, the severance stage of “coming out” is when they let go of their old identity, if they used to identify as straight than this is when they realize that this term no longer applies to them.
