Most people think sunscreen is only needed during the summer season and it’s only useful for a certain color of skin. Neither assumption is accurate. Sunscreens should be used year round and by everyone.
So just what is sunscreen? Sunscreen (commonly known as suntan lotion, sunblock, sun cream, and sun burn cream) comes in lotion, gel, spray, or other topical product forms that absorb or reflect some of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Thus, it helps protect us against sunburn. Another great benefit is that it can help reduce the risk of developing skin cancer, which can be avoided with proper skincare. It’s about more than just rubbing on sunscreen when you get to the beach. When it comes to sunscreens paying attention to its labels and ingredients is very important.
Are you familiar with UVB and UVA rays? UVB rays cause the skin to burn while UVA rays cause skin aging. Look for a sunscreen that contains at least one of the following, all of which block against UVB and UVA rays:
1. Avobenzone (can be expensive)
2. Titanium Dioxide (a less expensive option)
3. Sulisobenzone
4. Zinc Oxide
5. Ecamsule (a latest ingredient but also costly)
Also if you exercise you should purchase water and sweat resistant sunscreen. After you’ve applied a water resistant sunscreen it remains effective for at least 40 minutes. However, it is not waterproof so you’ll need to reapply it regularly (if swimming).
