Davel obtained his law degrees , B . Iuris and LLB , at the University of South Africa whilst working at the Department of Justice . He started out as a Clerk of the Criminal Court at the age of 19 and moved up the ranks to become a District Court Public Prosecutor , soon after a Regional Court Public Prosecutor , and later a District Court Magistrate at the age of 25 .
“ I left the criminal justice system when I got married and spent 4 years working at a small private company that specialised in the procurement and distribution of FMCG products to neighbouring countries such as Botswana and Namibia . But later I returned to law and completed my articles in Pretoria .
At the age of 31 , I was admitted as an Attorney with the right of appearance in the High Court of South Africa , whereafter I joined a prominent Legal Practice based in Sandton , acting exclusively as Attorney for commercial banks .”
This is where his love for real estate started . But Davel says acting for banks soon made him aware of the negative side of mortgage bonds , participation bonds and other securities . “ Property foreclosures , evictions , sequestrations and liquidations , insolvency enquiries and private prosecutions were all part of a normal day ’ s work . I wanted to see the positive side , for a change .
“ I resigned and got involved in home loan origination , franchising , business development , property development , etc . Since 2002 I have been assisting numerous businesses to put people in houses ; grow their businesses ; mitigate their risks , etc . and that is why I ’ m proud to be heading up PayProp SA for almost three years now .”
" We are proud to help the industry redress historic imbalances by opening up business opportunities in the private rented sector ."
“ Since 2003 , I have been committed to serving the greater real estate fraternity – as bond originator , real estate franchisor , business consultant and often also as sounding board , motivator , instigator , commentator , complaints desk and even punching bag . I think I ’ ll just continue doing that – serving the industry that I love , empowering property professionals from all walks of life , since I believe that they have a noble job – putting people in houses , helping families to establish homes where they can raise their children , creating wealth and protecting the assets that often represent the biggest investments that people will make in their lives .”
