OFFSHORE Preparing your mindset for wealth How to become a successful UK property investor PART 10 I n the ninth article of this series, we gave you some advice on how to identify the professional and ‘on the ground’ teams you will need to establish to invest in UK property from South Africa. Our 10th article examines the mindset needed to create a sustainable UK property investment business from afar. Mindset is of huge consequence. I have read hundreds of books about successful entrepreneurs and met a great many of them too – and the bottom line is they think very differently to the 99% of people out there who are stuck in routine jobs, complaining about their situation. The challenge that the 99% need to overcome is that they spend most of their time in their comfort zones. It is easy to talk about doing something around a braai with your mates. But, thereafter, most people do nothing about their circumstances and become what I call a ‘wantrepreneur’. Building any business is challenging and difficult. It pushes you outside your comfort zone, which is what ultimately makes you grow as a human being and is where the magic lies. As Hollywood actor Tom Hanks famously observed in the sport-focused movie A League of Their Own: “It's supposed to be hard. If it were easy, everyone would do it.” Sean Thomson, property investment coach at WealthTrek, explains how to develop the right mindset to ensure you build a long-term and sustainable UK property business. 52 MARCH 2021 SA Real Estate Investor Magazine “The richest people in the world look for and build networks, everyone else looks for work." This is precisely why a positive mental attitude is required by the captain of the ship when setting sail for any venture. “Get focused, learn the strategy, master it and then diversify into a new one." Investing is simple, yet complex. It is complicated even further when investing in another country as a foreign national. Some would-be investors will think it can’t be done and, as a result, their mind will be closed to the opportunity. Others will pursue it and, if they follow a system like the one we offer at WealthTrek and combine it with a positive mental attitude, they enjoy success. We have seen this happen with countless people that we have trained over the years. As Confucius famously said: “The man who says he can, and the man who says he cannot are both correct.” Ten Steps to Creating that Positive Mental Attitude Here is our 10-step method to get you started on building an indestructible international property business in the UK as a South African: Have a Really BIG Reason The reality is that there are going to be challenges – it’s not an ‘if’ or a ‘maybe’. How we overcome the challenges may well be dependent on our commitment to the cause. If the reason to continue is not strong enough, people tend to give up too easily. The motivation to achieve a goal is what drives the momentum to succeed. SA Real Estate Investor Magazine MARCH 2021 53
