Rational designs without
irrational expectations
I
n architecture, rational design is the term given
to the design and analysis process applied to a
building before construction to ensure that it
meets with compliancy regulations with regards to
green building, energy expenditure and consumption .
The criteria used for measuring purposes includes
(SANS 10400XA Compliant Reference Building):
- If performance (double) glazing can be removed
in lieu of single-glazed clear glass,
- Cavity walls and a heat pump for hot water,
- Cavity walls and a solar pump for hot water,
- Heating and cooling A/C,
- Cavity walls + LED lighting + single clear glass +
heat pump + heating/cooling AC,
- Cavity walls + single Low-e glass + single clear
glass + heat pump + heating/cooling AC,
- Cavity walls + Solarvue tinted glass + single clear
glass + heat pump + heating/cooling AC.
