INVESTOR TALK
FROM THE EDITOR
Investing in property seems a rather daunting exercise but it has been said repeatedly
that while there are risks to investing in property, once you do, your investment if
handled wisely will keep growing and rewarding you with a passive income and
contribute to your retirement when the time comes.
This edition we cover issues like what the recent credit amnesty means to someone
set on applying for a home loan. While on the one hand it is good news for those with
bad credit records, it isn’t good for those applying for home loans. Omitting certain
information from your record actually makes applying for home loans that much harder
because it simply becomes difficult to assess the risk levels of the applicant.
Amongst the pages you will find information on various important aspects of being a
home owner like ensuring all your Certificates of Compliance are up to date and above
board, and also some interesting facts as to what you as a home owner are not told when
it comes to pre-paid meters for both electricity and water. For second home buyers, the window for purchasing luxury
properties at great value is closing, if you are in the market, read Lew Geffen’s editorial on why you should act now.
TRACEE HARVARD
FROM THE PUBLISHER
My favourite investment subject has always been ‘the psychology of investing in real
estate’, which is the topic of our cover story in this edition.
Over the last eight years since I launched Real Estate Investor Magazine (REIM) in
South Africa, I have interviewed, studied and learnt lessons from many highly successful
investors worldwide. The number one reason for the incredible success these investors have
achieved is a strong mindset. Common among all of them is a growth and abundance
psychology regarding money, investments and relationships, instead of a focus on the ‘how
to’ mechanics of investing.
When talking about mindset, one name is top-of-mind: Donald Trump, the king of real
estate. Love him or hate him, Trump is one of the most successful real estate investors and
businessmen in the world. His mindset is clearly reflected in one of my favourite Trump
quotes: “What separates winners from losers is how a person reacts to each new twist of
fate”. The ability to deal with setbacks, changes and shocks is what defines winners and sets them apart from the rest. Mindset
has a lot to do with this ability. Read about this and other in-depth investor insights in our cover story on page 14.
In addition to a strong mindset, the modern investor also requires a new level of expertise for successful investment. There
is a plethora of new investment methods which do not require bank finance now coming to the fore for both residential and
commercial investors. We will expose these new investment methods in the months to come in REIM, in addition to bringing
you live investor events and webinars to demonstrate how you can take advantage of these opportunities, so watch this space!
We are also once again looking for South Africa’s No. 1 property investor! Enter our 2014 Investor of the Year competition
and you could be recognised as one of the country’s Master Property Investors.
