REIM managed to scoop up some awards
at the recent annual 2018 South African
Property Owners Association (SAPOA)
convention. The SAPOA Journalism
Awards for Excellence serves to encourage
journalists to continue striving to achieve
the highest standards. At the helm of the
Journalism Awards committee for the
past six years, Brian Azizollahoff said that,
“the calibre of these awards keeps grow-
ing from strength to strength.”During his
address, Azizollahoff said journalists play
a pivotal role in ensuring that the public
are kept well informed regarding issues
affecting the property sector. He said their
dedication and commitment to their craft
has not gone unnoticed. REIM’s own
editor, Monique du Toit, won the Young
Property Journalist of the Year award,
while REIM secured 2nd runner-up for
Property News Website and Property
Publication of the Year. We are very proud
of Monique and the entire REIM team
- and thank SAPOA for their acknowl-

At the recent RICS conference, Presi-
dent John Hughes (FRICS), said Africa
was a continent of huge opportunities,
boosted by its young population and
immense natural resources. Howev-
er, he highlighted rapid urbanization
to Africa’s cities and climate change as
major challenges. He said: “We need to
recognise the growing importance of
cities, as urbanisation gathers momen-
tum… National governments should not
be concerned about the growing power
of cities, but rather support the develop-
ment of cities.”
We also need to explore the opportunities
for investors to capitalize on technology.
Here are some of the key things that came
out of the RICS conference: Urbanization
- Move towards the cities; A new pace
of leadership; Global disruption - Small
business competitive; The example of the
Tesla Giga Factory; A people- first model
centered around health, education, well
being; Harnessing technology; Financial
empowerment and the effects of Block-
chain access to finance; Public private
partnerships; Sustainable environment
through green development and infra-
structure. The world of finance, invest-
ment, banking and the law are changing
fast. Read about how Blockchain is driv-
ing that change in our feature article.
I am always up for improving my self-de-
velopment. When I listen to international
financial gurus like Robert Kiyosaki, au-
thor of ‘Rich Dad, Poor Dad’ who is fea-
tured in this issue with his money insights,
he always gives small nuggets of really
good information that you can use. For
example, your biggest assets are your are
time and money - not your properties or
your businesses. Many people forget that.
He says start small and learn from others.
There are four fundamentals of real estate
investment that I learnt from Kiyosaki
that I would like to share with you that
can help you stand above the rest. Rule
one is that the property must put money
in your pocket from day one. Rule two is
that the property must be profitable by
itself and stand alone as an investment
and not require additional funding from
another investment or source. Rule three
is that you must control the investment
whenever possible including the income,
expenses and debt. Rule four is that you
must have an exit strategy or options of
when you will sell before you buy.
