Industry trends Also under the spotlight at the SAPOA Convention were global trends in real estate and building the future of the industry. Certainly one issue that stood out is sustainability. Maurice Mdlolo, Managing Director, Liberty Properties, the main sponsor of the event, commented that while the industry offers many opportunities for those who want to make a positive difference, one way in which industry players can make a measurable and lasting difference, not only for themselves but also for future generations, is to engage on sustainability. He noted that sustainability can be integrated into nearly every facet of design in commercial developments, with specif ic focus on ensuring the reduction of waste and, importantly, lowering the consumption of natural resources such as energy and water, which simultaneously lowers operating costs for tenants. The emphasis on sustainability is highlighted by the development of a Green Star environmental rating system, designed specif ically to assist the property industry to reduce the environmental impact of buildings. The system is all-encompassing and includes design, construction and interior fittings, as well as green leases to maximise the sustainable elements for tenants. This emphasis on sustainability was also clearly ref lected in the SAPOA Innovative Excellence 38 July 2014 SA Real Estate Investor No. 1 Silo at the V& A Waterfront was not only the overall winner, but also won the corporate office development category and the overall Green award.
