HOSPITALITY REVIEW A cut above the rest Lanzerac wine estate, hotel & spa NICHOLA LOOCK S teeped in a rich history, Lanzerac Wine Estate is a historic landmark and world-renowned pioneer of the pinotage wine. Nestled in the Jonkershoek Valley on the outskirts of Stellenbosch, Lanzerac boasts undisturbed views of mountain ranges, oak trees and endless rows of vineyards. Established in 1692, only 12 years after Stellenbosch itself was established, the estate has a rich history of architecture, owners, visitors and wines. Lanzerac made its footprint in the wine-making world with the world’s first bottled Pinotage. The renowned wine estate now offers three different ranges of wine selections, namely the Premium Range, heritage Range and cellar Master, Wynand Lategan’s limited artisanal wines. These ranges are available for tastings, as well as the recommended chocolate and wine tasting. The Lanzerac Tasting Room contains seemingly endless rows of wooden barrels and the scent of wine wafting through the air. As Lanzerac has evolved, so has their process of wine making, with a mixture of the old and new. This iconic real estate hosts a five-star hotel, restaurants, a deli, wine tasting room and a day spa. The hotel suites are fit for royalty, each with its own unique design and rich history. Escape the heat of the valley by taking a dip in any of the 12 swimming pools located around the estate. To truly enjoy the breathtaking views, a trip to the spa is mandatory. Lanzerac treats their guests to world-class spa services and facilities. You are greeted by a cascading staircase, which looks more like an art-installation, and the smell of 64 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2020 SA Real Estate Investor Magazine lavender gliding through the air. The spa is fully booked, but there is complete silence and serenity. Enjoy the massive azure indoor heated swimming pool or rejuvenate your soul surrounded by mountains and endless rows of vineyards. When choosing where to dine at Lanzerac, the Taphuis restaurant has to be mentioned by name. This decadent menu promotes proudly South African foods, while invigorating your taste-buds. The meals range from classic favourites like burgers and pasta, to traditional lasagne, pork ribs and bobotie, all presented like urban works of art. The beef burger is in a league of its own, incorporating a beer glaze, bacon, Huguenot cheese, onion rings and chunky chips. The slow cooked lamb shank falls off the bone and drips into a delectable tomato bredie. The Taphuis is located in a rebuilt area of the estate which was tragically burnt down in 2017. For the first time since Lanzerac was converted to a hotel, it had to close its doors to the public for 13 months and only re-opened their doors in July 2018. This rebuild was not only about reclaiming its glory and legacy. It was an opportunity for the Lanzerac to rise from the ashes and lead the way towards 21st century luxury - which they have undoubtedly accomplished.
