LAST IMPRESSIONS Rose Valloo Mortgage Manager TUHF Limited What makes you happy? Happiness is life, it is not an occasion. I’m happy when I’m enjoying life. What is the best book you have read and why? A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle because it helped me to deal with some of my past history growing up. It taught me that letting go is the fastest way to healing. It also taught me about the ego, what it stands for and what it means as well as how destructive it can be in one’s personality. It also taught me that being me in the way I am to the world is ok. What is the best advice you ever received? Live life in a way that makes Rose happy, because this is my journey and you only get one journey and one life so make the most of it. What was your first full-time job? It was at an engineering company in Durban where I was an administrator and I earned R500 a month. What person has made the biggest impact on your life and why? I know it is clichéd but it is most definitely Nelson Mandela and the reason why is that he created an opportunity to liberate us as a human race, not a colour. And in many ways I feel connected to that sentiment. In this same way Gandhi is also a person I look up to. His approach to non-violence, the concept that things can be done if you take it upon yourself as a nation to move, not as only one individual. Your change is just as important as everyone else’s. You cannot expect other people to do things for you. You have to take the leap. The same is true for me. the car park, it has lost value. You have huge potential to increase property’s value consistently. It is never a decreasing opportunity. It is an annuity; it can secure your future to live off one day. What has been your best investment? My education. What has been your biggest lesson when investing? Know what you are getting into. Don’t be a sheep and follow everyone else. Ask as many questions as you can and be fully appraised. Meet people and talk to as many people as you can, be a nuisance. It’s ok, it’s your money. What are the one thing people don’t know about you? Everyone knows I come from Unit 7 in Chatsworth, Durban. The one thing people don’t know about me is that they see a hard exterior, but I am actually soft inside and I care a lot about humanity as a whole. You have to be hardcore, which I am, but it is hard work. What do you do to relax? I like being with people. I’m not a person that is under stress because I enjoy what I do. If you love life, do you need time to relax? Just enjoying the journey is good for me. If you could change one thing in the world what would it be? Teach people to love and have kindness and high levels of tolerance for each other. What makes property such a great investment? It has the ability to appreciate, and it never stands still in value.
