Making the Most of
Small Spaces
Enhancing your smaller living space
Making the most of small spaces
Smaller living spaces are becoming more common these
days with the rising price of properties to buy and rent.
Whether you are leasing a studio apartment or want to
get more out an unused nook or cranny in your new
house, these tips will help you enlarge and enliven the
small spaces of your home.
with a glass table, and use glass framing for the paintings
or pictures on the walls. Windows are a natural source
of outside light, and curtain rails, which extend beyond
the pane, allow for the maximum amount of light to
enter. When you cover up your windows your entire
room will seem smaller.
Centre the Room
Avoid placing furniture and décor around the edges
of the room, as it has a tendency to create a slightly
dead space in the centre. Try and aim for a triangle of
items such as a two-person sofa, a centrepiece chair and
décor piece such as a table or bookcase. Avoid brighter/
clashing colours and instead opt for a more neutral
approach to colour. This helps to create a more unified
look and feel

Reduce Clutter
A smaller space may be the ideal home for larger
furniture or décor. The worry is that larger items may
end up dominating the room, giving it a camped and
cluttered feel. However, with the proper selection, a
larger item of furniture can create a more comfortable,
streamlined feel to a room with limited space. Instead
of three smaller items, place one larger one for a better
look and feel.

Put your vertical space to use
The open, vertical spaces of an room are an ideal canvas
for any wall art, which in turn will draw an occupants eye
up the room, thereby making the space seem larger and
more expansive that it is.
Play with natural Light and Dark
By lightening up the walls, you make a smaller, cramped
space feel more open and spacious. The darkened
hallway is accentuated by the brightness of the living
space, creating both a larger impression and warmer
environment.
