Real Estate Investor Magazine (REIM) met up with
Kim Kiyosaki in South Africa during her ‘It’s Rising
Time’ tour. In celebration of Women’s Month, we bring
you Kim’s sage financial advice and inspiration.

Kiyosaki. Kim is an
American girl from
Portland, Oregon, with her heritage
being part Swedish and part
German. She moved to Hawaii to
study at college and had no idea
how this move would transform
her life.
Like most traditionalists, she
planned her life the traditional
way: go to school, graduate, get
a job, work, climb the corporate
ladder. Her first job was at a local
magazine publishing business in
Honolulu. She eventually got two
jobs in advertising in New York
and was fired twice before she
realised that the corporate world
was not for her. She then ventured
into a clothing company with a
national distribution, which taught
her entrepreneurial skills. Not
long after that Kim joined Robert
as a partner in an entrepreneurial
business. Kim married Robert in
1984 and the business eventually
grew to 11 offices in 7 countries
presenting business seminars to
tens of thousands attendees.
It took several years before
Kim made her first investment.
She bought her first investment
property in Portland, Oregon, with
R50,000 that she did not have. But
she made her first R250 cash flow
per month with a 2 bedroom 1
bathroom house, which made Kim
realise that she can do far better in
real estate than with a job. Today,
Kim encourages women to get
into the world of investing, as she
believes they should not be reliant
on anybody else for their financial
well-being.

In 1994, Kim and Robert sold
their education business and
‘retired’ for a few years. In 1997,
with Sharon Lechter, they launched
the Rich Dad Company to take the
message of Rich Dad and financial
literacy to the world through
seminars, books, games and tools
designed to help entrepreneurs and
investors. Together they created
the board game ‘Cash Flow’, a fun
way to learn about investment, fast
tracking deals, income statements,
assets, liabilities and balance sheets.
Kim is now a renowned
international
speaker, author,
entrepreneur, radio show host
and real estate investor based in
Phoenix, Arizona in the US. Kim
has authored ‘Rich Woman’ and a
new book she recently launched
called ‘It’s Rising Time’. Even
though she is the spouse of ‘Rich
Dad Poor Dad’ author Robert
Kiyosaki, she started on her own
mission from humble beginnings
to become a self-made millionaire.
She is now a successful investor and
entrepreneur in her own right.
There are no limits,
no ceilings, glass
or otherwise, for
women in the
world of investing.
