Andrew credits his career success to his parents and the educational opportunities they provided him during his formative years . Born and raised in Grahamstown ( now Makhanda ), he enjoyed a wonderful family life , living on the school premises with his parents , who were both teachers at Kingswood College . This afforded him access to privileged educational and sporting facilities . Weekends and holidays were often spent in Port Alfred , creating lasting family memories .
Growing up , Andrew ’ s family thrived on sports . His grandfather , Jack Slater , was a Springbok Rugby player in 1928 , and his parents were active in various sports . This sporting environment provided Andrew with a well-rounded and positive upbringing , fostering strong relationships globally .
After completing his education at Kingswood College , Andrew served in the army in Bloemfontein , where he became a Lieutenant at the School of Armour and played cricket for the Orange Free State Defence Team . Following his national service , he pursued a Diploma in Hotel Management at Witwatersrand Technikon in Johannesburg .
