EDITORS LETTER

Change is inevitable , except from vending machines

It ’ s safe to say that the last three years have been rather eventful . From the COVID pandemic and associated onerous lockdowns , to Russia ’ s sabre rattling and economies around the world teetering on recession , there has been no shortage of drama and tragic comedy on the global stage .

If the last few years have shown us anything , it is that the rate of change is accelerating and it doesn ’ t look like slowing down anytime soon . While this climate of uncertainty adds risk to traditional investment strategy , it also brings new opportunities for the investor who is not afraid of embracing change .
This means that being flexible with investment strategy and agile with operations is vital if you don ’ t want your portfolio or business to be left behind . Im ’ not saying that we should follow every new investment trend . For instance , I still don ’ t know what NFT ’ s are and I ’ m too afraid to ask at this stage , but I do know that If I can ’ t understand it , it ’ s probably not for me .
One property investor who is certainly not afraid of embracing change features on our cover as this month ’ s Master Investor . Not discouraged after a few failed attempts , Retha van Rooyen started her student accommodation company in 2019 , and has managed to double the growth of her business every year since then . Retha has subsequently written a book about the subject to share her remarkable entrepreneurial journey and inspire other investors to explore this lucrative yet complex property investment model .
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you personally , our valued readers and partners , for being a crucial part of REI Media ’ s journey and ongoing success . Like almost every South African company , we have had our fair share of trials and tribulations over the last year , but it is how you rise up to face the next challenge that defines your direction . The challenges don ’ t get easier , but with enough practice , overcoming them does .
So , on behalf of the whole REI Media team , we send to you our best wishes for the festive season and an abundance of health , wealth and happiness in 2023 . This is the perfect time to reflect on the year passed , to rejuvenate your energy for the year ahead , and most importantly , create happy memories of good times spent with family and friends .
