Tertiary Institutions
There are many different types of tertiary learning institutions but the majority of South African students attend either university or college . The main difference between the two is that universities are state owned while colleges are private institutions . There are , however , 50 TVET colleges in South Africa which are state sponsored colleges and
they operate differently when it comes to student accommodation payments .
There are 26 universities in South Africa across all nine provinces . Presently , there are more than one million university students in South Africa and the government plans to add 500 000 more students in public institutions by 2030 .
Since most colleges are private institutions they can make their own rules . Each college operates differently and you would have to do your “ homework ” on the specific college if you intend catering for their students .
