EDITORIAL VIEW surprising to see that black people are still by far the lowest represented . The question is what really needs to be done ? We know that unless the current inequalities change , the problem will soon burst and more damage may be done . So why not willingly transform the industry ?”
Mayisela says : ” Barriers to entry are perpetuated by those in positions of power who simply refuse to make decisions to bring about change . In my view , one of the prevalent barriers that exists is the inability for big business to make gender parity a strategic imperative within their organisations . The only way we ’ ll see change is if the leadership team enforces the importance of gender diversity at all levels within the organisation .”
TUHF illustrates the power of female leadership within a business . This month ’ s Master Investor is Velda Derrocks , Regional Manager - Cape Region for TUHF . Derrocks shares her journey as an ambitious woman in a traditionally male-dominated sector . With her beliefs deeplyrooted in inclusion and growth , she is determined to transform this sector .
While Derrocks was given this opportunity within the business , her accomplishments also speak to her unwavering ambition . Starting her career in a “ high-profile , niche space that was very male dominated at the time ” did not detract from her goals . In fact , it might have pushed her further . “… I saw that as a challenge . I always strive for excellence and , even though most of the people I dealt with in those early days were male and it could be a little difficult at times , I built up a good reputation .” Proving that overcoming external barriers is only half of the process .
Barriers on females are not only institutional , but internal as well . Women ’ s confidence in their abilities , willingness to take up space in positions of power and most importantly , the strength to leave environments which do not serve their interests are the most important steps females in this sector can take . “ Admittedly , another barrier is perpetuated by women themselves . That is , we not only lack the belief in ourselves , but we also don ’ t take the necessary steps that will ultimately ensure that we make progress . The reality is that we often operate in hostile environments that don ’ t naturally embrace change . This means we have to equip our minds to forge ahead despite opposition . By doing this , change will eventually come !” concludes Mayisela .
Stay safe and successful investing .
