I'm a graphic designer. A print based graphic designer. I have been for over 20 years. So why get out of my comfort zone, from a skill set I'm very good at and highly knowledgeable in, and look to also be a web designer? Because that's what the world has destined for print based careers, to merge them all in with the web and digital world. These days more clients want a full package designer. Forget specialising anymore!
So after not studying for over 20 years, I went back to school. Full time. While still running my business and being a mum and a wife and a friend. I started the same day my youngest started kindy. To say I was absolutely scared is an understatement. "What if I can't keep up?" "What if I don't get it?" So many "What ifs?"...
But as a working mum, I made it happen. I threw myself into this study gig and put my business (and sometimes my family) behind it. And once I stopped seeing it as an annoying hindrance I had to do because it would be good for my business, I..., wait for it... started to enjoy coding. Enjoy coding. Like a geek. #geeklife #coderforlife
I was exhausted. My exhaustion was exhausted. Lots of late nights and constant thoughts about function{make this work}; and <action>something happen
</action>. But there was an end goal. I made it through. I came out the other side and can now call myself a graphic and web designer.
Am I glad I did it? Yes. Did I get out what I hoped to? Yes. Would I do it again? Hell no!!!!
Lesson I learnt: To get out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself. How else will we grow in ourselves and in our businesses?
