Next , Reagan biked 112 miles , riding on the left side of the road , at an average speed of 19.1 miles per hour . At mile 70 , he swatted a bee on his leg as it was stinging him , which felt to Reagan at the time like it could be disastrous . He finished the bike leg in five hours 49 minutes , against his goal of “ sub-six hours .” The last two miles , Reagan says , “ It hit me , ‘ I ’ m about to go run a full marathon now .”
The marathon was a 4-lap course . Reagan coached himself each lap , “ I only have to run 10 kilometers right now .” He says , “ not being allowed to wear headphones or to access my phone allowed me to be more present and to really experience everything .” As he ran through the city of Taupo , he was stricken by the large crowd of spectators . Reagan says , “ the whole city comes out to cheer for the runners .”
At the conclusion of his fourth lap , the race official recognized from Reagan ’ s wristband that he had completed the race . When she waved
him through to run the last stretch to the finish line , Reagan says , “ I just started crying .” Reagan ’ s final time was 12 hours 35 minutes 41 seconds .
“ It was a God-ordained trip ,” Reagan says . “ Everything went smoothly .” Throughout the trip , Reagan kept in mind Psalms 91 about God ’ s protection , which says , “ A thousand may fall at your side , ten thousand at your right hand , but [ evil ] will not come near you .”
Reagan says , “ The Southern Hills community has been a huge part of my journey . I will remember all of my Southern Hills ’ friends ’ texts , prayers and support as integral to my experience as the training and race itself .”
We are so proud of you , Reagan ! Thank you for exemplifying what it means to be Southern Hills .
