"Oh, on your way home, pick up a can of corn from the
grocery”
When I was a youngster, a can of corn was in our basement
storage room. Here is how it got there.
It's Springtime. Call a farmer, ask him to come with his
horse, plow and drag to make a garden.
Break up the clods of soil with a hoe, dig a hole, drop in 3
corn seeds, add a dipper of water from the pail you are
carrying and cover it with dirt.
Wait a few weeks while the cornstalks arise, the ears start to
fill out, then harvest the ears.
In the kitchen: Shuck the ears, cut the corn from the ear.
Place pint Mason jars in boiling water to sterilize them.
Fill jars with corn, add water to top of jar, look for bubbles,
slide table knife down inside to break up bubbles.

Place rubber sealing ring on the can, put glass cover on,
partially snap metal wire over cover. Place cans in steam
cooker.
My parent's steam cooker was a metal box about 24 inches
high and 12 inches square with 2 doors. The bottom had an
area to hold water.
Place steamer on top of a kerosene oil stove. Put glass jars
filled with corn on shelves, close doors and let the contents
steam cook.
When the corn was cooked, remove jars, snap down the
wire completely. Place on table until cool. Take to storage
room in basement.

I am retired and a widower, 87 years old. In good health,
living in a Senior Citizen's apartment complex. I have 3
chidren and 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
During my working years I was a sales representative for a
tool manufacturing firm.
