Perhaps the most anticipated film of 2013 was
The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug, at least for
my family. Sadly we were more than a touch
disappointed. It started out well enough and
we easily forgave the expanded roles of the
elves and other deviations from the book – for
a time. Smaug was fantastic and we even
forgave the liberties taken with that part of the
story – but, hold on, I need to stop because I
do not believe in giving up spoilers. I will just
say that while this film is a must watch, I
remain utterly distraught over the gross
injustices to the book. Still, I remain hopeful
that The Hobbit: There and Back Again will
redeem the trilogy.
Moving on, I finally took time to watch Mortal
Insruments: City of Bones. I enjoyed the
series, or rather the first few books of the
series and its prequels (The Infernal Devices
trilogy). The movie had some redeeming
qualities including special effects and a
creepily pleasing performance by Jonathan
Rhys Meyers. I confess I was pleasantly
surprised by the performance of Jamie
Campbell Bower though he was not the Jace I
had envisioned when reading the book. If you
are looking for something light, a bit
paranormal, and with some teen angst,
definitely watch it!
Finally, I wanted to give a brief mention of
Beautiful Creatures. Unfortunately I could not
make it through the entire movie. Despite a
rather impressive cast (including a few of my
personal favorites, Jeremy Irons, Emma
Thompson, and Emmy Rossum) the movie was
so far off base that I skipped large portions of
it. The book was mediocre and the movie
even less impressive. In my opinion, Beautiful
Creatures is definitely a wreck it.
