FortravelingmusicianChrisJones,30,ofSiouxFalls,S.D.,
seeingthefuellightonhisdashboardusuallycomesasno
surprise.Jones,aprofessionalgraphicdesignerduringthe
week,travelswithhisbandacrossNorthandSouthDakota,
Minnesota,NebraskaandIowanearlyeveryweekendofthe
year.
“I'mconstantlydrivingacrosstheMidwestwithmyband,
andIrunlowongasmoreoftenthanIshouldadmit,"Jones
says."ItseemsthegaslightalwayscomesonwhenI'vejust
passedthelastgasstationformiles.Consideringtheareas
whereItravel,Igetprettynervousaboutrunningoutofgas
onthesideofaremotehighway.It'snotagoodfeeling,butI
thinkwe'veallbeenthere."
It'slikelymostdriverswouldagreethatthefuellightoften
comesonatinopportunetimes.Stuckintrafficonafreeway;

youstress,damagetoyourcarandtimespentonthesideof
theroad."
Hoffexplainsthatbyallowingacartorunonempty,dirtand
contaminantsaremorelikelytobecomesuspendedinthe
fuelandblockthefuelfilter.Whenfuelisextremelylow,the
fuelpumpisnolongersuspendedinfuelandcanoverheat.
Insomecases,lowfuelcanevenaffectpowersteeringand
brakes.
Toavoidanexpensivetriptoamechanic,Hoffadvisestaking
aproactiveapproachtofueling,advisingdriverstoalways
keepatleastaquartertankofgasinthetankatalltimes.
Runningoutofgasinheavytrafficisnotonlyinconvenient
butalsodangerous,soHoffrecommendsfuelingupbefore
gettingonhighwaysormajorroads.Also,becomingfamiliar
withwheregasstationsarealongadrivingroutewillalso
helppreventrunningoutofgasonlongtrips.Alwayskeepa
