Riveting Stories of Powerful Love
emotional adventures
MICHAEL spread his hands
in a peaceable gesture.
The War Between the States not only
destroyed all Michael Cantrell loved, it left
the young, former Confederate cavalry
officer without faith or hope, a solitary,
haunted man trying to escape his demons in
the vast western frontier. Then, one spring
day along the Wind River, he finds himself
suddenly in the thick of another life-anddeath struggle - Annie Devlin's war.
Desperate to hang on to her ranch and her
life, waylaid by gunmen hired by a
powerful rancher who covets her land,
Annie and her young brother, Robbie, fight
a furious, rapidly losing battle for their
lives.
When all seems lost, into the fray steps a
cold-eyed, steel-nerved stranger - Michael
Cantrell - who saves Annie and Robbie, but
is himself grievously wounded.
With Annie's care, Michael recovers not
only his strength but a portion of his
embittered soul as well. Fighting his
powerful feelings for her, convinced he has
nothing to give, Michael determines to stay
with the Devlins only long enough to
ensure their safety against the treachery that
would destroy them.
Reluctantly, Michael, who for years has
known only loss, allies himself with a
stubborn, courageous young woman who
will take his heart by storm and test the
limit of his honor, his mettle - and his
passion.
A READERS' FAVORITE 5-STAR novel
and an ORANGE ROSE AWARD finalist,
TERMS OF SURRENDER takes the
reader on a stirring adventure that is also a
heartfelt, emotional journey.
"War's over, boys," he
smiled amiably, eyes as
cold as ice. By the light of
the lantern he could make
out the faces of three big
troopers looming in the
stable doorway. He could
have smelled the liquor on
them from the next
county.
"Ya hear that, Jubal?" one
trooper asked in feigned
astonishment. "The war's
over! What the hell war
you think he's talkin'
about?"
Jubal spat and the grin left
his face. His mouth twisted
in a grimace of disgust and
anger. "The war what kilt
my brother Joe, Willie.
That's the one I reckon he
means."
Jubal took a step forward,
then suddenly flew
backward, propelled by the
force of Michael's boot
slamming into his belly.
Had he had the breath to
do so, Jubal would have
screamed.
Fighting with the skilled
desperation and no-holdsbarred viciousness that
had kept him alive through
four years of hellish
slaughter, Michael put all
three troopers on the floor
several times over before
they finally coordinated
their assault enough to
jump him. Not drunk
enough to be mercifully
sloppy, they battered him
furiously against the wall
with sheer, overpowering
strength of number.
Suddenly, Annie burst
from Jet's stall, shrieking
like a banshee and wildly
swinging a lantern.
"Annie!" Michael gasped.
"Run! Get out of here!"
If she heard, she paid no
attention. "Let him alone!"
she screamed at his
assailants. "Let him alone,
you miserable, no-good
devils! Damn your souls!"
She threw herself at the
astonished troopers like a
small, furious whirlwind,
the flame flaring wildly in
the lantern, throwing a
ghastly, hellfire light over
their faces. *
