The Ending Silence Movement
My friend and advocate Debbie Roberts will share with you the story of how the book, “Ending Silence:
A Healing Journey” came to be., (click link to order) I had the pleasure of interviewing Debbie on my
radio show Experience, Strength, Hope (click link to listen to that interview) about this wonderful book
of healing with the help of the Central Okanagan Elizabeth Fry Society (COEFS) program.
Our first step: Ending Silence: The Healing Journey consists of true stories from adult women survivors
of child sexual abuse and their journeys of healing and recovery. The women within the pages of this
book spent years in silence, never speaking of or sometimes even remembering all that had happened to
them. After completing the Central Okanagan Elizabeth Fry Society’s (COEFS) “Beginnings Program: For
Women Who Have Suffered Sexual Violence.” they (we) developed a deep need to help others
understand that it is never too late to begin the healing journey.
Writing in detail and reading our stories aloud to the group was an essential element of the trauma
therapy. As you might imagine, this was a very monumental and difficult step for each woman to
undertake.
In 2012, our group facilitator shared her vision of putting together an Anthology as a way to help those
who have not attended therapy, for various reasons, and for those who are still struggling with their
healing journey. Relying on her inside knowledge of each group member’s abilities a book club was soon
formed. Our trauma therapist remained the one constant that held us together and gave encouragement
when needed.
From there, it was agreed that the stories only have minor editing for spelling and some punctuation so
that the author’s “voice” remained true. With the stories themselves being difficult to read due to the
brutal nature of the subject, we added what the healing journey had been like for us, what our coping
mechanisms had been as children and adults and where we are today after professional therapy. The
