While the recreational opportunities at Rathbun Lake are endless, there’ s more to be discovered in the neighboring communities that surround it. No matter where you decide to camp, hike or fish, each community is easily accessible within an hour’ s drive of the lake for food, shopping, festivals and fun.

APPANOOSE COUNTY
“ Iowa’ s Ocean,” located in Appanoose County, is just seven miles north of Centerville, the county seat. Centerville has a population of just over 5,000 people and is home to the world’ s largest square, with locallyowned restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, hotels and boutiques. Visitors can also golf at the Appanoose Country Club, walk along Lelah Bradley Trail, visit Morgan Cline City Park or enjoy Centerville Bike Night on the Historic Square.
Centerville Bike Night – May to August
This event is held every fourth Friday of the summer. Ride your motorcycles to Historic Downtown Centerville for an evening of live music, food and beverages.
LUCAS COUNTY
Chariton, the Lucas County Seat, is located about 35 miles northwest of Iowa’ s Ocean. With a population of over 4,100 residents, Chariton has plenty of opportunities for shopping, dining, arts and culture, museums and outdoor recreation. Stop at the Vredenburg Performing Arts Series to get out of the sun and enjoy a performance, eat old-fashioned candy from Pipers on the square, or visit Lucas County Veterans Memorial Park.
Chariton Farmers Market – Thursdays, May to October
Open every Thursday from 4-6 p. m. on the east courthouse lawn, the Chariton Farmers Market is a growing attraction that features local produce, art and handmade goods vendors. At the market, you will find fresh fruits and vegetables, herbs, honey, jams, bread eggs, baked goods, goat milk soap and lotion, handmade jewelry, accessories and art. A free book is available for each child attending the market, with youth activities and interactive vendor booths.
Appanoose County Fair – July 21-26
This week-long event is held at the fairgrounds on the northwest side of Centerville during the third week in July. Visitors can enjoy local 4-H exhibits and animals, along with live concerts, rodeos, demolition derbies and more. A full schedule of events can be found at appanoosecountyfair. com.
Renegade Nite on the Chariton Square – June through August
People from all over Iowa and surrounding states come together in the heart of Chariton’ s downtown for food, fun, music and more. The KIIC Party Box kicks everything off at 5 p. m., and attendees enjoy a live band plus food and retail vendors from 6-10 p. m. More information can be found at charitonchambermainstreet. com.
