Rape Culture Reinforced by the Media 16 | Page 9

'Say Anything' Movie Review:

Ethan Reeves: Welcome Zerlina Maxwell, Id like to thank you for joining us today to talk about the various aspects of rape culture seen throughout the classic movie, 'Say Anything'. Id like to start by first asking you if you enjoyed the message of this movie?

Zerlina Maxwell: I have to confess that 'Say Anything' is one of my favorite movies. But the films most memorable scene is actually rather cringe worthy. The entire message of the movie is to promote romance with the behavior of John Cusack, which in my opinion was harassment.

Ethan Reeves: Interesting, can you recall a scene in particular, which specifically exemplifies this trend?

Zerlina Maxwell: When John Cusack's character, Loyd Dobler, shows up at Diane Court's house in the middle of the night, boom box in hand, its not romantic. In fact, its stalking.

Ethan Reeves: I thought you might reference that scene, what kind of message do you think this sends to the audience, and more importantly, the generations within our society?
