An entertainment editor's responsibilities might include supervising staff members, producing and editing articles, supervising the work of entertainment writers and reporters and collaborating with other editors and senior management. Other job duties might entail preparing operating budgets, participating in entertainment staff board meetings and assisting with graphics concepts.
Entertainment editors must adhere to exact deadlines and ensure that their staff does the same. They may assist staff members with revising entertainment copy and ensuring that source information is correct. Editors may also assist with headline development and image captions.
Requirements for Entertainment Editors
Education
Entertainment editors usually hold at least a bachelor's degree in journalism, broadcast journalism, communications or a similar field of study. Students should also take courses in liberal arts in order to have a versatile and well-balanced education in entertainment editing. Obtaining a master's degree in journalism might increase a student's career options.
Students who want to become entertainment editors may choose to specialize in either print, digital or broadcast journalism. Bachelor's degree classes may include history of journalism, grammar, copy editing, media ethics, newspaper workshop, writing and reporting and magazine editing. Master's degree students may focus on communications, reporting and editing in print or broadcast journalism.
