1.6 Indian Case Studies • Unequal carriageway at Lothian Road with C/W changing
from 19m to 40m to 15.5m to 10m in 45m distance
1.6.1 Multi Modal Integration at Kashmere Gate, ISBT
Delhi (Proposal as per UTTIPEC website) • The carriageway width of Gokhale Marg of 6.5m including
pedestrian movement, hawker and IPT waiting.
• Indirect subway at Kashmere gate metro station without
escalators are less attractive for pedestrians.
• Dangerous pedestrian crossings at major roads for
vulnerable road users.
• Lack of sufficient and well maintained pedestrian
infrastructure near the Terminal.
Existing Scenario
•
•
•
The MaharanaPratap Inter-State Bus Terminal at
Kashmere Gate is the oldest and the largest in India
catering to buses from Delhi and six other states i.e.
Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and
Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
It is located in North Delhi in the Old Delhi area in close
vicinity to the Red Fort and the Old Delhi Railway Station.
The area has 3 metro lines (red, violet and yellow), ISBT,
local bus terminal, IPT and private modes. Kashmere Gate- Inter State Bus Terminal, Delhi as Multi
Modal Transport Hub:
The area is characterised by high footfall and interchange
between multiple local, city and regional modes such as
bicycle and NMV, local bus / mini bus, auto rickshaw,
shared rickshaw, private vehicles, metro (Phase 1, 2 and
3), Interstate Bus Terminal, RRTS - Panipat (proposed),
RRTS – Alwar (proposed). Delhi’s Kashmere Gate Inter-State Bus Terminal has been
developed as Multi Modal Transport Hub of Delhi. The area
has DMRC’s biggest interchange metro station for three
metro lines, Inter- State Bus Terminal, City Bus Terminal,
Parking spaces for private cars, IPT stands and pedestrian
infrastructure.
Traffic Mobility related issues in Kashmere Gate
•
•
Unequal carriageway width varying on LalaHardevSahai
Marg, with inadequate space for pedestrians, IPT, bus
stop and hawkers leading to encroachment.
High speed from Yudhister flyover causes pile up at
intersection and signal ahead and intersection is too
close to landing of flyover.

This is set to play a significant role in Multi-Modal Integration
(MMI) of various transport systems. The major key attractions
of this interchange is as follows:
•
The Kashmere Gate metro station is one of the largest
transport hub in Delhi-NCR. With the start of Violet Line
from Escorts Mujesar to Kash mere Gate which was
opened last year, it has become the largest interchange
of DMRC metro.
Transport Mobility Issues in Kashmere Gate
• As per UTTIPEC study, interchange hub is estimated to
handle 2.95 lakhs passenger per day by 2021, which will
rise to 3.98 lakhs by 2031 and 5 lakhs by 2041.
• During peak hours, the entire transport hub will handle
about 25,000 passengers that is likely to reach 50,000
by 2041.
• The metro has also built strong network of pedestrian
subways all around the Kashmere Gate area, for conflict
free pedestrian movement.
• As per the recent MMI proposal for Kashmere gate by
UTTIPEC, roads will be re-aligned for smooth flow of
traffic, continuous pedestrian pathways will be built and
bus stops would be relocated.
• There are presently three platforms in Anand Vihar
Railway Terminal and two platforms at Anand Vihar Halt
which is used for EMU’s and also for the passage of long
distance trains. The EMU’s connect major sub urban
towns around Delhi, such as Ghaziabad, Bareilly, Aligarh,
Meerut, Saharanpur etc.
• The area experiences very high footfall on normal peak
hours and experience interchange between various
regional local transport modes present.

1.6.2 Multi-Modal Transport integration at Anand Vihar,
New Delhi
Existing Scenario
• Anand Vihar is located in the eastern part of Delhi, it is
very close to Ghaziabad District of Uttar Pradesh.
• The Anand Vihar Railway Station is located adjacent to the
Anand Vihar Metro Station and Inter-state Bus Terminal,
making this area the hub of inter-modal transport in East
Delhi; the passengers can easily travel to any part of
Delhi alighting from the Anand Vihar Railway Station and
availing the city bus services or metro.
