taggering growth in rail passenger numbers
over the last two decades has triggered
major investment by Indian Railway towards
development and maintenance of infrastructure.
This, in turn, has created the need for access
to detailed and accurate rail asset data by
Railway Management for effective decision-
making. line speed (i.e. up to 200 km/h) without restricting the regular
services. Fugro’s RILA system yield hundreds of kilometres
of accurate survey data per day, a rate that could not be
contemplated using traditional terrestrial techniques. RILA’s
mantra is to ‘collect once and use many times’ providing
route-wide capabilities that offers strategic efficiencies and
new insights for predictive maintenance, helping to increase
the lifespan of assets.
Working closely with various rail/train operators globally,
Fugro specialists are adapting to/developing the latest survey
technology – principally based around LiDAR/laser, radar
and video methods - for train-mounted collection of asset
information. Fugro’s stride has resulted in developing a unique
trainborne data collection system – RILA, which captures all
information of track and surrounding in 3D environment. The acquired data can be used for many applications
including absolute track position for pre-renewal design, post-
renewal as-built information, input for alignment, input for
OHE, correction data for tampers and verification of 6ft track
distances, determining railhead wear, track gauge, twist and
cant.
Fugro’s RILA system is unique in the world. It measures
absolute track position and geometry to engineering

accuracy,
simultaneously
incorporating
georeferenced video to record track assets. Compact and
transportable, it connects to the rear of a regular passenger
train in less than two minutes and surveys the rail tracks at
Fugro’s in-house developed algorithms enable us to create a
highly accurate 3D virtual model of the railway corridor, from
which a variety of operational, safety and comfort parameters
can be reported. This information is delivered to clients via
a web-based RILA Portal, where clients can remotely view,
inspect and analyse assets for engineering and maintenance
operations.
