21. ALONZO CAPRON (AMERICAN 1838-1917) POLYCHROME CARVED WOOD RELIEF, circa 1853, depicting
a two-masted schooner sailing towards a lighthouse followed by a tug, a fortress flying the American flag to the right, meticulously
detailed with carved choppy water, sails and lighthouse in full relief, inscribed “Made by Alonzo Capron of South Dennis,
Massachusetts”. Height 15 ¼ in. Width 30 ½ in. Depth 2 ¾ in.
Typewritten Note Affixed Verso: This bas relief woodcarving was done by Alonzo Capron of South Dennis, Massachusetts, when he was about
fifteen years of age and was an apprentice seaman on the Nantucket Lightship. It was purchased by my mother about 1931 from his son, Alonzo
Everett Capron. The maker was born October 4, 1838 and died June 8, 1917. He is buried in the old section of Swan Lake Cemetery, Dennisport,
Massachusetts. This picture, therefore was made in about 1853.” Signed and dated in ink, Edward A. Hoppin, 1962.
