Specialist Training
The next step is specialist training which is split between RAF Cosford for 16 weeks foundation engineering training and MOD Lyneham for 44 weeks specialisation training. Training times are approximate and subject to change. You will be enrolled on an Advanced Apprenticeship and a team of RAF and civilian instructors will teach you electrical engineering principles. You will then put the theory into practice when learning how to service and repair a vast range of equipment.
On successful completion of the training course, you will receive your first posting. Your specialist training, along with the experience you gain on the job, should lead, where eligible, to the award of a Apprenticeship Level 3 Engineering Technician- Mechatronics Maintenance Technician( Electrical).
Additional Qualification Opportunities
Further opportunities will be available as you gain more experience and undertake different roles within your specialisation. Specialist courses such as temporary electrical installation design and maintenance of airfield security screening equipment are just two examples.
Your First Tour
For your first tour, you will probably be posted to an RAF station where you will work on a wide range of airfield support equipment in an electrical maintenance bay. You will inspect and service all kinds of engine-driven equipment and the vehicles and equipment used in‘ life support’ to aircraft handling. You could also assist experienced technicians in more complex repair tasks, using test apparatus to diagnose electrical system faults. You will have a key role in supporting the station’ s mission and you will form part of a professional team.
