A week after the Fukushima meltdown and the releasing of radioactive materials into the ocean, high levels of radiation were detected in the water. Seawater was collected 330 meters from the nuclear plant and the results showed high levels of iodine-131 and concluded that those levels were significantly above the maximun limit set by the government. This radioactive iodine causes damage to thyroid and is very dangerous. The japanese government warned citizens of the high levels and advised them not to use tap water, and to stay away from fish in the area10.
